What a bathroom renovation actually costs in Udaipur

11 min readJain Ceramic Mart, Udaipur

Bathroom mid-renovation with basin and fittings being installed

Most bathroom cost guides online quote Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru labour rates. In Udaipur, skilled trade rates run meaningfully lower, so those national figures can overstate your budget by a fifth or more. What follows is a breakdown built around what a renovation actually involves in a Tier-2 Rajasthan city, priced as market ranges rather than as a quotation.

The short answer: three realistic budget bands

For a standard Udaipur bathroom of roughly 35–45 sq ft (about 5×8 feet), renovations tend to fall into three bands:

SpecificationTypical totalWhat you get
Budget rebuild₹55,000 – ₹95,000Entry-level ceramic tiles, floor-mounted WC, pedestal basin, single-lever fittings, basic shower
Mid-range₹1.1 – 1.9 lakhVitrified tiles, branded CP fittings, wall-hung or one-piece WC, counter basin, glass shower partition, storage geyser
Premium₹2.5 lakh +Designer sanitaryware, concealed cistern with wall-hung WC, thermostatic diverter, rain shower, large-format or natural stone surfaces

Where the money actually goes

Across all three bands, the split is fairly consistent: products — tiles, sanitaryware and fittings — account for roughly 55–65% of the total, and everything else (demolition, plumbing, waterproofing, labour, debris removal) makes up the remainder.

1. Demolition and debris removal — ₹4,000 to ₹10,000

Stripping out old tiles, fixtures and screed for a standard bathroom is typically 1–2 days of work. Budget separately for malba disposal: a tractor-trolley load in Udaipur generally runs ₹1,500–₹3,000, and a full bathroom strip-out usually produces one to two loads.

2. Plumbing and electrical rough-in — ₹12,000 to ₹35,000

This is where budgets quietly break. Re-piping in the same positions with CPVC for hot and cold lines is the lower end. Moving a WC or changing the drain position means breaking the slab, redoing waterproofing and re-screeding — and that pushes you to the top of the range or past it.

Plumber day rates in Udaipur typically run around ₹550–₹1,200 depending on experience and whether the work is contracted per-point or per-day. If you can live with your existing fixture positions, do — it is the single most effective saving available.

Which pipe you use matters as much as who installs it. We cover that in detail in our guide to CPVC vs UPVC vs PVC pipes.

3. Waterproofing — ₹40 to ₹120 per sq ft

Never economise here. The overwhelming majority of bathroom leaks start at two places: the coving where the floor meets the wall, and the points where pipes penetrate the slab. Both are cheap to treat properly during construction and ruinously expensive to fix afterwards, because the repair means demolishing finished tiling.

For a sunken-slab bathroom, insist on membrane treatment carried at least 150 mm up the wall, proper coving at every junction, and a 24–48 hour flood test before any tiling begins. Fill the sunken area with water, mark the level, and check it the next day. If the level has dropped, you have found a leak while it still costs almost nothing to fix.

4. Tiles and tiling labour — ₹18,000 to ₹70,000+

A standard bathroom needs roughly 130–180 sq ft of tile once you account for walls up to ceiling height, the floor and around 10% wastage for cuts. Ceramic wall tiles start around ₹35–₹60 per sq ft; good vitrified tiles run ₹60–₹150; large-format and premium finishes climb well beyond that.

Tiling labour is usually ₹25–₹45 per sq ft. Use a proper cement-based tile adhesive rather than a traditional mortar bed for vitrified and large-format tiles — their low porosity means a mortar bed simply does not bond reliably, and hollow tiles will eventually crack or lift.

Choosing between materials? See marble vs granite vs vitrified tiles.

5. Sanitaryware — ₹8,000 to ₹60,000+

Typical market ranges for the three core pieces:

  • Floor-mounted WC: ₹4,000–₹12,000
  • One-piece WC: ₹12,000–₹35,000
  • Wall-hung WC with concealed cistern and frame: ₹22,000–₹60,000 — remember the concealed frame must be decided before the wall is built
  • Wash basin: ₹2,500–₹18,000 depending on whether it is a pedestal, counter-top or vanity installation

6. CP fittings — ₹9,000 to ₹55,000+

A standard bathroom needs a basin mixer, a bath or shower diverter, an overhead shower, a health faucet and two angle valves. Entry-level branded sets start around ₹9,000–₹15,000; mid-range single-lever sets with a proper cartridge run ₹18,000–₹30,000; premium and thermostatic options go well past that.

What actually separates the price tiers is explained in our guide on how to choose bathroom CP fittings.

7. Water heater — ₹6,000 to ₹22,000

A 15–25 litre storage geyser suits most Udaipur bathrooms. Given local water hardness, the tank lining and the ease of descaling matter more than headline wattage — see our water heater guide for hard water.

A worked example: mid-range 40 sq ft bathroom

ItemCost
Demolition + debris removal₹7,000
Plumbing & electrical rough-in (same positions)₹18,000
Waterproofing (40 sq ft @ ₹70)₹2,800
Tiles (160 sq ft @ ₹85) + adhesive₹16,600
Tiling labour (160 sq ft @ ₹35)₹5,600
Sanitaryware (one-piece WC + counter basin)₹24,000
CP fittings set₹22,000
Storage geyser (25 L)₹11,000
Glass shower partition₹14,000
False ceiling, mirror, accessories₹9,000
Total≈ ₹1,30,000

Five ways to control the budget without regret

  1. Keep fixtures where they are. Not moving the WC or drain can save ₹15,000–₹35,000 on its own.
  2. Spend on what you touch daily. A good basin mixer and shower are used every day; an expensive designer floor tile mostly isn’t noticed. Put the money in the fittings.
  3. Tile walls to ceiling only in the wet zone. Outside the shower area, tiling to 7 feet and painting above with a washable finish looks deliberate and saves material.
  4. Buy sanitaryware and fittings together. Buying the full set from one counter usually prices better than assembling it piecemeal, and guarantees the finishes actually match.
  5. Never cut waterproofing or the flood test. Saving ₹3,000 here routinely costs ₹40,000 later.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a full bathroom renovation cost in Udaipur?

A full bathroom renovation in Udaipur usually costs ₹55,000–₹95,000 for a budget rebuild of a standard 35–45 sq ft bathroom, ₹1.1–1.9 lakh for a mid-range specification with branded CP fittings and a glass shower partition, and ₹2.5 lakh or more for a premium bathroom. The single biggest variables are tile selection and whether plumbing lines are being moved.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

A complete bathroom renovation typically takes 12–18 working days in Udaipur. Demolition takes 1–2 days, plumbing and electrical rough-in 2–3 days, waterproofing plus its curing and flood test 4–5 days, tiling 3–4 days, and fixture installation 2–3 days. Waterproofing curing is the step that cannot be rushed.

What is the biggest hidden cost in a bathroom renovation?

Relocating plumbing is the most common hidden cost. Moving a WC or shifting the drain line means breaking the floor slab, redoing the waterproofing and re-screeding, which can add ₹15,000–₹35,000. Keeping fixtures in their existing positions is the most effective way to control a renovation budget.

Should I buy sanitaryware before or after tiling?

Buy and physically receive your sanitaryware before tiling begins. The tiler needs the exact WC rough-in distance, the basin's waste position and the concealed cistern frame dimensions to set out cuts and openings correctly. Ordering afterwards is the most common cause of misaligned tile cuts and drilled-through waterproofing.

Is waterproofing really necessary in a bathroom?

Yes — waterproofing is the one item that should never be reduced to save money. Most bathroom leaks begin at the floor-to-wall junction and around pipe penetrations, and repairing a leak later means demolishing finished tiling. Budget ₹40–₹120 per sq ft for waterproofing and insist on a 24–48 hour flood test before tiling starts.
